Galleries have sprung up throughout the country, and particularly in London, in spots as varied as shopping mall outlets, a scooter showroom and a video store. Last month the British government, worried about the economic, psychological and criminal hazards of retail vacancies, announced a $5 million “revival fund” for local governments in hard-hit areas to transform empty shops into something useful, like showrooms for local artists, and another $800,000 to help artists and arts organizations turn vacant high street shops into artistic spaces."

just returned ---- this is a favorite place to wander + feel inspired. just south of Philadelphia, it's an eclectic mix of architecture, gardens, and a sweet little cafe centered in the greenhouse. [bon appetit magazine recently featured their amazing menu and farm fresh sensibility]. the hours go quickly when there and it's so worth the country drive. take back roads.

factory 20 + it's counter part modern 50 are places that i dream of. i couldn't believe my luck when i stumbled upon their websites + then proceeded to invest a good portion of the afternoon glazed at the myriad of eclectic finds. the following Saturday we found them working in their warehouse - not sure they were expecting the company, they graciously let us peer about . both fellas departed from their corporate gig's [dino = illustrator // eric = art director] + now keenly search out vintage objects that range anywhere from british stadium receptacles to apothecary display cabinets. reminds me of another great place, DARR.

DON'T go stunting your pee, there's a piff breh. It may sound like gobbledegook, but it could end up in the Collins English Dictionary which is seeking the latest slang for a new edition.
Publisher HarperCollins has come up with a shortlist of words put forward by 14 to 18-year olds and has asked the social networking website Bebo to help pinpoint the most common slang terms in Britain.
Over coming months, Bebo's 10.5 million users will vote on the words they think should be included in the 30th anniversary edition of the dictionary.
"Teenage slang is notoriously hard to pin down if you rely on the normal channels," said Cormac McKeown, head of content at Collins.
"By the time it's filtered into publications, broadcasts, and eventually mainstream speech, it's too late, young people have stopped using it. "The findings from the Bebo community will give us the chance to keep track of an exciting part of our language that usually goes unrecorded." Among the slang terms proposed, "piff" means good, "breh" means boy and "shifted" means get arrested.

Other slang words are "stunting" (showing off), "pee" (money), "co-dee" (friends) and "pinky" (50 pounds).
The list also includes "sick" (cool, good) "bare" (a lot of), "seen" (cool), "mugged" (mocked), "fiend" (addicted) and "hater", which means a negative person.
A team of Collins experts will research the words' origins and decide which ones should enter the dictionary. Recent slang terms that have made it into the Collins dictionary include hoodies (hood-wearing youths) and WAGs (celebrity wives and girlfriends).

'Thom Yorke joked at the ridiculousness of it in an interview for NPR radio, hinting that they set the competition to find out how people would approach such a challenging task -------- I decided to take the piss a bit, as the contest seemed to be in that spirit. Based on the lyric (and alternate title) "Big Ideas: Don't get any" I grouped together a collection of old redundant hardware, and placed them in a situation where they're trying their best to do something that they're not exactly designed to do, and not quite getting there.

It doesn't sound great, as it's not supposed to.

song dong, an installation artist from China, has collected all the oddities + normalities his mother hoarded in their Beijing apartment and has curated them into a intensive archive on the second floor of the MoMa. clothes, books, kitchen utensils, toiletries, shopping bags, rice bowls, dolls, school supplies - all used, recycled + stashed away - the installation includes every button, every pen, Ms. Zhoa's bed and even her fridge. his work is usually noted as highly conceptual - this seemingly presents a bitter sweet connective between a mother lost and all that surrounded them in a childhood home - down to the last particle. the iconic rubbish turns mournful ------

murmer study is an installation running through august 09 | Weisman Museum Minneapolis, Minnesota. a collaborative work by christopher baker and the kitchen budapest, the installation uses 30 thermal printers that continuously monitor such sites as Twitter - creating a visual archive for what baker refers to as 'digital small talk'. baker provides further comment - "unlike water-cooler conversations, these fleeting thoughts are accumulated, archived and digitally-indexed by corporations. while the future of these archives remains to be seen, the sheer volume of publicly accessible personal — often emotional — expression should give us pause."
